“How does it feel to stand on a gateway?” That’s what I always ask visitors when we’re about to explore the TRX North-South Bridge.
The TRX North-South Bridge is not just steel and concrete. It’s a vital artery connecting Kuala Lumpur to its future. This bridge is a crucial access point. It links roads and highways to the Tun Razak Exchange. TRX is KL’s upcoming international financial hub.
Completed in 2021, this bridge was built for about RM 40 million. It may seem like a lot. But consider what it achieves. The TRX North-South Bridge spans 66 meters. Its width stretches to 27.25 meters. It connects the TRX South to the North development plots. It also passes over the existing Smart Tunnel portal.
The bridge’s design is fascinating. It features a composite steel truss system. This system rests on mechanical bearings. These bearings allow for movement at the bridge’s expansion joints. Eight longitudinal steel trusses form the core. They are reinforced with cross-steel ties. The deck slab is 250mm thick. Bondek formwork supports it.
High Tension cables run within the truss system under the concrete deck. These cables meet the stringent requirements of Tenaga Nasional Berhad. TNB is Malaysia’s electric utility company. The design also meets local authorities’ specifications. Safety is paramount. The steel structures have two-hour fire protection. Its natural frequency exceeds 5Hz. This design ensures pedestrian comfort.
Constructing the TRX North-South Bridge was an engineering feat. The foundation uses bore piles. The site is built on KL Limestone Karst Formation. Engineers detected cavities in localized areas. They meticulously grouted these cavities.
One of the project’s highlights was the single lift launching of the 66m span steel box truss bridge. This truss weighed 220 tonnes. The team used a 1600-tonne heavy lifting crane and a 250-tonne crawler crane. These lifted the trusses at a 50m radius. To ensure stability, the 1600-tonne lifting crane’s ground slab was supported with a pile raft close to Smart Portals.
The TRX North-South Bridge functions as more than just a road. It’s a pedestrian link. It also serves as a utilities crossing. Imagine walking across. Feel the subtle hum beneath your feet. It is the flow of Kuala Lumpur’s energy.
So, as you stand here on the TRX North-South Bridge remember its purpose. It is a gateway. It connects more than just roads. It links ambition to achievement. It’s a testament to Kuala Lumpur’s vision for the future. A future where finance and innovation meet seamlessly. This bridge is an unsung hero. It quietly supports the city’s ascent on the world stage.
