Imagine stepping back in time right here at the Deoksu Gallery. It is a branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. This gallery has witnessed Korea’s journey through art. Let’s uncover its secrets together.
Deoksugung Palace wasn’t always a palace. It started as the home of Grand Prince Wolsan. He was King Seongjong’s older brother. The royal family needed a temporary home after the Imjin War. Their palace had burned down. King Seonjo stayed here too. Gwanghaegun made it a proper palace in 1611. He named it Gyeongungung Palace. The name changed to Deoksugung Palace in 1907. It means “palace of virtuous longevity”.
The Deoksu Gallery, or MMCA Deoksugung, resides within these historic walls. It adds a unique traditional atmosphere to the art experience. The gallery opened in 1998. It was created by renovating Seokjojeon Hall. Japan built this stone structure as an art museum in 1938 during their occupation. The building has a symmetrical design. Six stone pillars stand tall in the front. It is a prime example of modern architecture in Korea.
Inside the Deoksu Gallery, you will discover Korean, Asian, and Western art. These artworks span modern and contemporary periods. The main exhibition spaces are on the second and third floors. You will find the first and second exhibition rooms on the second floor. The third and fourth exhibition rooms are on the third floor. Each exhibition has a different theme. They include planned and collective exhibitions.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art celebrated its 50th anniversary. It started small in 1969. It had a four-person staff. They were in the backyard of Gyeongbok Palace. Now, it’s a major art space in Asia. It holds over 8,000 art pieces.
To mark the anniversary, the MMCA launched “The Square: Art and Society in Korea 1900-2019”. This project explored Korean history through art. The Deoksu Palace branch covered the early 20th century. This was when Japan colonized Korea. The exhibition featured patriotic works. Artists like Chae Yong-shin and An Jung-sik aimed to protect the nation through art. The period also included Kim Whan-ki’s works. He is a globally recognized Korean painter.
The Deoksu Gallery is more than just a museum. It seeks out and researches modern art. It exhibits and preserves artworks. The gallery also supports educational programs. It promotes publications and international exchanges. From 1998 to 2005, it planned 38 unique exhibitions. Besides exhibitions, it hosts performances. Music, mime, lectures, and seminars enrich the experience.
