A sprawling green expanse greets you. This is Hammer Park a historical gem in Hamburg’s eastern Hamm district.
Hammer Park wasn’t always a public park. Its origins trace back to the 17th century as Hammer Hof a private estate. In 1773 Jaques de Chapeaurouge a Genevan merchant bought it. He transformed it into a stunning English-style landscape garden. This “Chapeaurougenhof” boasted ponds grottoes and artificial hills a true marvel of its time.
Sadly the Napoleonic Wars left their mark. In 1813-14 French troops ravaged the park. They cleared the land for a clear line of fire against advancing Russian troops. De Chapeaurouge’s son rebuilt a new mansion further east.
Next came Karl Sieveking Hamburg’s Senator Syndicus. In 1829 he acquired the estate. He followed the example of his godfather Caspar Voght creating an “Ornamental Farm”. This included a brewery distillery dairy and more. He hosted prominent figures including King Christian VIII of Denmark.
By 1894 Hamm was incorporated into Hamburg. The need for housing exploded. The Sieveking family offered their vast estate to the city. Initially plans included smaller parks and housing. Public outcry saved most of the land leading to the Hammer Park we see today.
Otto Linne Hamburg’s First Garden Director redesigned Hammer Park between 1914 and 1920. He created a Volkspark a people’s park. He incorporated sports fields playgrounds and model allotments. His design including the road network and stadium remains largely intact.
World War II sadly damaged Hammer Park. The mansion and other buildings were destroyed. Parts were used for temporary housing. Post-war the park saw additions like a minigolf course one of the first in Northern Germany. The original layout has mostly been preserved.
Today Hammer Park is a vibrant green space. It features a sports stadium a children’s paddling pool and more. A testament to its history and an important urban green space for Hamburg’s residents. A large old lime tree near the stadium is believed to be 400 to 600 years old a silent witness to Hammer Park’s long and fascinating history. So take your time. Explore this beautiful park. Discover its secrets for yourself.
