Officer Sheridan, a small-town boy from Pennsylvania, wouldn’t have imagined a playground named after him in the heart of Brooklyn. Here at William Sheridan Playground, his memory lives on. He came to New York City seeking opportunity in 1911. He joined the NYPD in 1917, assigned to the 82nd Precinct right here in Brooklyn. William Sheridan Playground stands as a tribute to his bravery. He received a commendation for an act of incredible courage during his police service. Sadly, this act also resulted in serious injuries. He later died in action during World War I in 1918. William Sheridan Playground is more than just swings and slides. It’s a symbol of service and sacrifice. The playground recently underwent a major renovation. It reopened in June 2023. Now you’ll find a vibrant space with high-reaching play equipment, musical installations, and spinners. There’s even a dedicated area for toddlers. While the toddler section might seem modest at first glance, it offers welcome shade and toddler-sized picnic tables. The park also boasts a refreshing new water feature with fountains springing from the pavement. Kids can challenge themselves on the rope climbing structures. However, parents beware, retrieving a determined child from these structures can be an adventure in itself! For older kids and adults, William Sheridan Playground features updated basketball courts and exercise equipment. There’s even a small track and field area for those looking to get their steps in. William Sheridan Playground is a place where community thrives and where the memory of a brave officer continues to inspire.
