In 1915 the 43 Gemeindeschule moved into a new building. This building is the Rudolf-Wissell-Grundschule. It’s a listed building designed by Ludwig Hoffmann. He built it between 1913 and 1914. The impressive four-story structure with three wings stands proudly before you.

The Rudolf-Wissell-Grundschule has a rich history. It wasn’t always called that. Initially it housed the 43rd municipal school. Another school the 311th was also located here. It later merged with the 43rd in 1932. After that it became the 1st and 2nd elementary school of Wedding.

During World War II the building served as a hospital. The school relocated. It returned ten years later. In 1962 the school was renamed. It honors Rudolf Wissell. He was a Social Democratic Reich Minister of Economics and Labor in the Weimar Republic. He passed away that same year.

Today the Rudolf-Wissell-Grundschule is an open all-day school. It serves the eastern Soldiner Kiez. This area is considered a social hotspot. A significant portion of its students have non-German native languages. In 2015/16 around 88.8% of students were in this category.

Architecturally the school is fascinating. It’s part of a planned housing block. The planned houses never materialized. Now the school complex stands alone. Its design is notable for its simplicity. Unlike other Hoffmann schools it lacks playful child-friendly reliefs. Its austere style reflects a post-World War I architectural shift. The lack of ornamentation represents a departure from his earlier style. The school building and the adjacent teacher’s residence create a unique architectural ensemble. The teacher’s residence is more ornate with window pediments and rosettes. The gym is tucked away between the wings. It’s not visible from the street. The school building itself is a testament to its era and history. It stands as a listed monument. The Rudolf-Wissell-Grundschule is more than just a school it’s a piece of Berlin’s history.
