Chirping greets you at the Vogelschutzgehölz Langenhagen. This isn’t just any bird sanctuary. It’s a hidden haven a 1.5-hectare plot tucked away in Langenhagen.
Established in 1962 the Vogelschutzgehölz Langenhagen began as a private passion project. Local bird enthusiasts leased the land. They built aviaries raising pheasants doves parakeets and chickens. It was a secret paradise a vibrant collection of feathered friends hidden from public view. Over time the group shrank to just nine dedicated members. Their passion however remained unwavering.
Two years ago they decided to share their avian treasure. The once-muddy pond was renovated. A botanical trail was added with new signage. Now the Vogelschutzgehölz Langenhagen welcomes visitors on Sundays. Coffee and homemade cake await those who come to visit.
The Vogelschutzgehölz Langenhagen boasts an astonishing variety. Around 150 birds from roughly 30 species live in 15 aviaries. Twenty pheasants strut their colorful feathers. Among them are magnificent Golden Pheasants and regal King Pheasants with impressive tails that can reach 1.4 meters. Seven types of parakeets flit through spacious enclosures. Even wild guests like Mallards have made themselves at home. Mandarin ducks and other species have chosen to stay. A pair of black swans a unique addition from Holland are a particular highlight. Despite being wing-clipped for safety they’ve thrived raising six cygnets last year and five this year. A local fox sadly claimed some of the young ones.
