Cobblestones whisper secrets on the Rue des Fossés. These stones have seen centuries unfold. They’ve witnessed the grandeur of ducal palaces and the bustle of a growing city. The Rue des Fossés in Lille isn’t just a street. It’s a time capsule, connecting us to the heart of Lille’s rich past. This street, born in 1603, sits on land once occupied by the gardens of the Palais Rihour. Imagine the dukes of Burgundy strolling through these very grounds. The name “Fossés” itself speaks volumes. It translates to “ditches,” a nod to the former palace gardens’ protective trenches. This area expanded significantly in 1603. The expansion encompassed the old Molinel suburb. This growth led to the creation of the Rue des Fossés. The street runs parallel to the Canal des Molfonds, a subterranean waterway flowing between Rue de Béthune and Rue des Molfonds. This canal was once part of the city’s 13th-century defenses. These defenses protected the parishes of Saint-Maurice and Saint-Sauveur. At the southern end of Rue des Fossés, where Square Morisson now stands, was the Abreuvoir des Jésuites. This watering place for animals, fed by the Canal des Jésuites, was a vital part of city life until it was covered over in 1883. The college of Jesuits established in 1606, situated along present day Rue de l’Hôpital-Militaire, gave its name to both canal and watering place. As you walk down Rue des Fossés, take a moment to admire the architecture. Classic Lille-style houses from the late 17th and early 18th centuries line the pedestrianized street. Look closely at number 2. You’ll see a rather obvious example of façadism, where a new building hides behind a preserved old façade. And don’t miss number 13, at the corner of Rue des Molfonds. This historic building is a listed monument. Today, the Rue des Fossés is a vibrant hub, buzzing with cafes and restaurants. Yet, amidst the lively atmosphere, the whispers of history persist. Each building, each stone, holds a story waiting to be rediscovered.
