Founded in 1946 the North End Church of God In Christ stands tall on Custer Street. It’s a Detroit landmark a testament to faith and resilience. Pastor Archie Gray and his wife Sister Louise Gray established this church. They started with just five members a piano and donated chairs. Their dedication laid the foundation for what the North End Church is today.
The North End Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community hub. It served as a beacon of hope in the North End of Detroit. The church provided support and spiritual guidance. It offered a safe haven for the community’s residents.
Sister Gray is credited with suggesting the church’s name. The name reflects its location in Detroit. The church’s growth is remarkable. From those humble beginnings it flourished. It became a pillar of strength for generations.
After Pastor Gray’s passing in 1955 Elder Wallace M Cryor took over. He married Sister Louise Gray. Together they continued the legacy of the church. Sister Cryor called North End ‘The Saving Station’. It was a place of salvation and spiritual journeys.
Elder Cryor and Sister Cryor led the church for 45 years. Elder Willie B Toone succeeded them in 2003. He and his wife Lady Roberta Toone continued the church’s growth and outreach. His vision focused on empowering people spiritually academically economically socially and physically.
Bishop Toone’s leadership strengthened the church’s presence in the community. Tragedy struck again when he passed away in 2021. Elder Dion Walls and Sister Donnietra Walls were appointed as the church’s fourth pastors in 2022. They’re continuing the rich legacy of service and faith. The North End Church of God In Christ stands strong. It continues to be a vital part of the Detroit community. Its doors are open to all who seek spiritual guidance and community fellowship. The church’s story is one of faith perseverance and community. It’s a story that continues to unfold.
