“Did you know this serene haven was once farmland?” I ask, gesturing towards the lush greenery. Welcome to Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge. It is a treasure nestled within Logan City, Queensland. This 196-hectare refuge tells a story of transformation, conservation, and community.

Once upon a time, in the 1920s, this land was known as Cornubia Park. It was a sprawling farm. Timber getting, dairying and crops of corn, oats and barley defined its purpose. Imagine the clatter of machinery and the gentle lowing of cows. Then, in 1934, the Jessens purchased the property, renaming it Cornubia. The land changed hands again in 1956. It was subdivided into smaller lots, slowly transitioning towards residential development by the early 1980s.

But some land was preserved. Between 1999 and 2010, the local government council wisely purchased parcels of land. This formed the protected nature conservation area we see today. Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge now consists of the former Cornubia Forest Park to the south. It also includes land known as the Cornubia Escarpment in the north.

This refuge is more than just a collection of trees. It is managed as part of Australia’s National Reserve System. Its objectives include the conservation of flora and fauna. Recreation is also important. Bushwalking and mountain bike riding are popular activities here. Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge is also managed under a Koala Nature Refuge Agreement with the state government. This commitment highlights the importance of protecting local wildlife.

As you wander through Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge, notice the tall open forest ecosystem. Blackbutt trees dominate here. They create a canopy that filters sunlight onto the forest floor. Keep an eye out for the brown thornbill. This small bird is an indicator species. Its presence suggests a healthy ecosystem. Both the blackbutt ecosystem and the brown thornbill are considered endangered, making their protection even more critical.

The walking trail here is an easy 1.4km walk. Wide paths wind through the trees. Wooden bridges cross over gentle creek beds. These are perfect spots to look for water dragons basking in the sun. Information plaques are placed along the track. They offer insights into the local flora and fauna.

At the Parkview Crescent end of the track, a whimsical surprise awaits. A private fence has been transformed into a fairy garden. Butterflies, insects, birds, and toadstools create an enchanting display. It is sure to spark the imagination of children and adults alike.

Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge is home to a wide variety of animals. These include koalas, greater gliders, wallabies, bandicoots and over 50 species of birds. It is part of the Koala Coast. This means that it plays a crucial role in protecting these iconic Australian animals.

So, as you explore Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge, remember its past. From farmland to protected sanctuary, it embodies the importance of conservation. Take a deep breath. Listen to the birds. Appreciate the beauty of this natural haven. Cornubia Forest Nature Refuge is a place where history and nature intertwine. It offers a peaceful escape for all.
