“Father of San Diego” they called him. Alonzo Horton. His name echoes through the streets of this city. He saw something others didn’t. A vision. A future.

Alonzo Horton wasn’t born here. He came from Connecticut a man with a restless spirit and a cough that sent him west. He made his fortune in Wisconsin. He traded land and cattle. He even briefly sought gold in California. Yet gold dust was less lucrative than ice. He found success selling ice to miners. Imagine the irony.

Then came San Diego. In 1867 Horton arrived. He saw the potential of San Diego Bay. He saw a town clinging to the old ways. He saw a future built on the water. He bought 960 acres for a pittance 27 and a half cents an acre. This was “New Town” Horton’s Addition.

Old Town resisted. They scoffed at his vision of a city by the bay. But Horton persevered. He built wharves and businesses. He even pushed for a city park what we now know as Balboa Park. He established the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. He championed the Republican party in this Democratic stronghold. He even grew a beard like Abraham Lincoln’s.

Horton’s Addition thrived. Land prices soared. Horton’s fortune grew. But then fortune turned. Land values crashed. His wealth dwindled. He died in 1909 at the age of 96. His legacy however lived on. Horton Plaza a once grand shopping mall stands as a testament. A physical monument to his foresight.

Remember his name. Alonzo Horton. The man who saw a city where others saw only a sleepy village. A man who dared to dream bigger. He dreamt a city by the bay. He built the foundations of modern San Diego. Walk these streets. Feel the legacy of Alonzo Horton beneath your feet. His vision is still here. All around you.
