“Where fortunes are declared” could very well be the motto of the Osaka Customs. Let me tell you more about this place. We are standing before the Osaka Customs. It plays a vital role in Japan’s international trade.

The Osaka Customs is more than just a building. It is an essential part of the nation’s economic framework. Its main office is located in the Minato district of Osaka. The Osaka Customs is responsible for a large area. This includes the prefectures of Toyama Ishikawa Fukui Shiga Kyoto Osaka Nara and Wakayama.

It has a rich history dating back to 1867. It started as the Kawaguchi Transport Office in August 1867. This was in Tomijima Itchome now Kawaguchi Nichome in Nishi Ward Osaka City. In September 1868 it was renamed the Osaka Transport Office. This coincided with the opening of Osaka Port. It became the Osaka Customs in January 1873.

The main office was relocated in May 1920. It moved to Minato Ward. In October 1937 the agency transferred control of Gifu Aichi and Mie prefectures. Nagoya Customs took over these areas. In November 1952 the main office was rebuilt. This was part of a 10-year project to improve Osaka Port. The current main office was completed in October 1969. It is part of the Osaka Port Bay Joint Government Building.

The Osaka Customs has several branches and sub-branches. These extend its reach. These include the Osaka Customs Main Office. You can find it in the South Port Branch Office. Another sub-branch is in the Osaka Foreign Mail Branch Office. There are also customs branches in Maizuru and Sakai. Plus there is the Wakayama Customs Branch Office.

Throughout its history the Osaka Customs has seen many directors. These leaders have guided the customs through changing times. One notable director was Takatoshi Nakayama. He was an alumnus of the University of Tokyo. He served as director from July 2019.

The Osaka Customs is not without its share of incidents. In 2011 officials from the Kansai Airport Customs Branch. They were accused of using harsh interrogation tactics. This involved suspects importing stimulants. In 2017 a customs officer at Kansai International Airport. The officer allowed a passenger to bypass security. This caused a flight delay. In August 2019 an official was charged with stealing money. The money was in a lost wallet at the airport.

Despite these incidents the Osaka Customs remains a vital institution. It protects Japan’s economic interests. It facilitates trade. It ensures compliance with customs laws. It continues to adapt to modern challenges. The Osaka Customs stands as a symbol of trade and regulation. It connects Japan to the global economy.
