Once a sanctuary for the needy, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle now stands as a testament to Berlin’s layered past. This chapel is one of Berlin’s oldest buildings. It was built around 1300. Imagine Berlin in the 1300s. Generous donations financed the chapel’s construction. It became attached to a hospital of the same name. This hospital cared for the poor, the sick and other needy people. It welcomed pilgrims.
Over the centuries, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle was expanded and altered. A roof tower was added in the 15th century. It was later removed in the early 19th century. The stunning star vault was added in the 16th century.
Fast forward to the early 20th century. There were plans to demolish the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle. The intention was to make room for a business school. Concerned citizens intervened to prevent its destruction. Instead, the chapel was incorporated into the new building. The interior decoration of the chapel was removed to a museum. It then served as a lecture hall.
During the GDR era, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle had a more utilitarian purpose. It served as a school cafeteria. Another extensive renovation took place in 2005. Its interior was restored. The chapel now serves as a formal venue for the Humboldt University.
Today, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle stands near Hackescher Markt. After its restoration in 2005, it now hosts conferences, concerts and receptions.

A speaker’s desk is equipped with a microphone. Hand and clip-on microphones are available. Conference facilities are in place. A separate cloakroom offers 160 hooks.
A catering area, the Green Salon, enhances the venue. It includes a mobile counter. Bistro tables and small mobile tables are available.
