Garrison Park. A secret gem nestled along the Bronx River Greenway. It’s a place where the gentle rush of the river blends with the distant hum of the city. Garrison Park hasn’t always been this tranquil oasis. It was born from a need, a desire to connect communities and create a green artery through the heart of the South Bronx. This new park is part of the Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project. The project, spearheaded by the New York State Department of Transportation, aims to create more than just a park. It’s building a vital link in the Bronx River Greenway, connecting residents to the waterfront and providing safer access to Hunts Point and Hunts Point Riverside Park. Imagine strolling along the multi-use trail, pausing on a bench to watch the river flow by, or simply enjoying the fresh air and the vibrant green space. Garrison Park offers all of this and more. Located just south of Concrete Plant Park, the park’s entrance is at the corner of Garrison Avenue and Edgewater Road. From there, a planned underpass beneath the Bruckner Bridge will seamlessly connect Garrison Park to Concrete Plant Park. This connection is key, opening up even more of the Greenway to the community. The construction of Garrison Park has not been without its challenges. There have been necessary disruptions to Concrete Plant Park, including tree removal and temporary closures. But these are growing pains, necessary steps in the creation of something beautiful and lasting. The project began in 2020/2021. It’s a testament to the ongoing efforts to revitalize and enhance the Bronx River Greenway. So next time you find yourself seeking a peaceful escape in the city, remember Garrison Park. This small but significant park, a testament to community and connection.
