The year is 1949. A new institution emerges in the nascent Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the Học viện Chính trị Quốc gia Hồ Chí Minh. Nestled in Hanoi, the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics embarked on a mission to shape the nation’s future leaders. Originally named the Nguyễn Ái Quốc Party School, the Học viện Chính trị Quốc gia Hồ Chí Minh has undergone several name changes over the decades. These changes reflect the evolving political landscape of Vietnam. From Trường Đảng Trung ương Nguyễn Ái Quốc to Trường Nguyễn Ái Quốc Trung ương, and then to Trường Đảng Cao cấp Nguyễn Ái Quốc, each name carries a piece of the academy’s rich history. In 1986, it became the Nguyễn Ái Quốc Academy of Social Sciences. It finally adopted its current name, the Học viện Chính trị Quốc gia Hồ Chí Minh, in 1993. The academy’s significance extends beyond its name changes. This institution serves as the primary training ground for Vietnam’s political and administrative elite. It operates directly under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The academy is responsible for training and developing leaders at various levels. From mid-level to senior officials, and from those in the public sector to those in state-owned enterprises, the academy’s reach is extensive. The Học viện Chính trị Quốc gia Hồ Chí Minh also functions as a hub for research. The academy delves into Marxist-Leninist theory, Ho Chi Minh Thought, and the development of Party lines and state policies. It also conducts research in other political sciences, further solidifying its role as a leading intellectual center in Vietnam. Today, the academy boasts an impressive organizational structure. It is headed by a President, currently Professor, Dr. Nguyễn Xuân Thắng, who also serves as a member of the Politburo. Several Vice Presidents support the President. The academy also houses various institutes and research centers. These include the Institute of Philosophy, the Institute of Political Economy, and the Institute of Social Sciences. Each institute contributes to the academy’s comprehensive approach to political education and research. The academy also manages its own press and publishing house, ensuring the dissemination of its research and findings. This ensures that the academy’s work reaches a wide audience and contributes to the national discourse.
