Beneath this unassuming facade lies a secret, a story etched in brick and rosewood. Welcome to Pete’s Tavern. It is New York City’s oldest continuously operating bar and restaurant. Can you feel the echoes of countless conversations and clandestine deals?

Pete’s Tavern building dates back to 1829. It originally housed the Portman Hotel. By 1864, a “grocery and grog” store became the first drinking establishment here. Tom and John Healy bought it in 1899. They renamed it Healy’s Cafe.

In 1922, Peter D’Belles purchased the establishment. The name Pete’s Tavern was born and has remained ever since. The forty-foot rosewood bar is original. The tin ceiling and tile floor have been here since 1864. Imagine the stories they could tell.

Now, picture this: Prohibition. Selling alcohol was illegal. Yet, Pete’s Tavern thrived. How? Disguised as a flower shop. Fresh flowers adorned the entrance. Patrons in the know gave a password. Then they were escorted through a fake refrigerator door into the bar. Politicians needed a place to make deals. Pete’s was just three blocks from Tammany Hall. Some say officials turned a blind eye.

The second booth from the front holds a special place in literary history. It was here that O. Henry, a neighborhood regular, penned “The Gift of the Magi” in 1905. He lived just down the street at 55 Irving Place. O. Henry also mentioned “Healy’s” in his short story “The Lost Blend.”

Step inside Pete’s Tavern. Notice the walls. They are adorned with photos of locals and celebrities. The cozy booths offer an intimate dining experience. Young and old, locals and tourists, the famous and infamous all gather here.

Pete’s outdoor cafe dates back to the early 1950s. It embodies the European tradition of al fresco dining. Take a seat on Irving Place. Admire this picturesque, historic landmarked district.

Pete’s Tavern has appeared in numerous films and television shows. These include “Two for the Seesaw”, “Seinfeld”, and “Sex and the City”. It has also been featured in commercials.

Gary Egan has been the General Manager and proprietor of Pete’s Tavern for over 30 years. He’s seen it all. Born in Dublin, Gary’s journey took him through London, Paris, and Munich before landing in New York.

Gary says Pete’s Tavern is special because it’s older than hot dogs and hamburgers. It keeps regenerating itself. The tavern is known for its classic cocktails. These include Old Fashioneds and Martinis. The Gramercy Burger is another favorite. It features braised short rib.

So, raise a glass to Pete’s Tavern. It is a living legacy. It is a place where old New York is always new. Gary says, “This is the other side of it… It’s just a little step back in time.”
