Ever wondered about Denver’s hidden gems? Sunnyside is one. Nestled in the heart of Denver Sunnyside is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a living tapestry woven from threads of history immigration and community.

Founded in 1858 Sunnyside emerged alongside Denver itself. Initially a mix of Irish and later Italian immigrants it blossomed into a vibrant community. These immigrants toiled in nearby rail yards and smelters. They created thriving businesses and gardens. “Little Italy” flourished with small cottages. Vegetables grown in these gardens fed the city.

The late 1800s saw major shifts. The Silver Panic hit Denver hard. Despite economic hardship Sunnyside persevered. In 1896 it officially became part of Denver. Streetcars connected it to the bustling downtown area. The early 1900s brought a new wave of Hispanic immigrants. They followed the arrival of the sugar beet industry which significantly reshaped the area.

Sunnyside’s evolution continued through the 20th century. The Argo smelter a significant part of early Sunnyside burned down in 1913. Public housing was later built east of Pecos Street. The neighborhood’s character adapted to these changes. The Italian influence waned as the Hispanic population surged. Streetcar service ended in 1950 marking another shift in the neighborhood’s transportation.

Throughout its history Sunnyside maintained a strong sense of community. La Raza Park a vital gathering place for decades hosted speeches by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales a Chicano movement leader. Renamed in 2020 its historical significance is undeniable. Denver City Council is considering making it the city’s third historic cultural district. The Sunnyside Music Festival which started in a backyard now draws crowds to Chaffee Park each year.

Today Sunnyside stands as a testament to its diverse past and bright future. Its blend of historic charm and modern amenities attracts new residents. It reflects Denver’s rich history and continues to thrive. New restaurants and shops have arrived alongside the light rail stop just east of Sunnyside. This has brought new attention to this remarkable Denver neighborhood. Explore Sunnyside and discover a story that unfolds with every street corner and every friendly face you encounter.
