Can you imagine attending three different schools in one day? For some students of St Michael’s Primary School in Parkhead, this was a reality. St Michael’s Primary School has a rich history, though its logbooks are sadly missing. We know it first appeared in Glasgow Directories in 1901-1902, nestled on Nisbet Street. The school joined the Education Authority in 1918. In 1933, St Michael’s expanded, adding an annexe on Elba Lane, near where St. Michael’s Church now stands. This created a complicated situation for families. Parents would escort their youngest children to the “temporary” Elba Lane school, then rush their older kids to the original Nisbet Street location. The oldest students attended St. Mark’s for advanced studies. This logistical nightmare wasn’t just inconvenient. It highlighted the desperate need for a new, larger school building. This need also delayed the construction of a new church, as the school occupied part of the required land. The existing church, with its leaky roof and creaky floor, could only hold 400 people, a fraction of the parishioners. The Eastern Standard reported in July 1936 that plans for a new church and school were ready. The proposed school would accommodate 1,000 students, and the church, 1,400 worshippers. It was a waiting game against the slow churn of bureaucracy. St Michael’s eventually moved to Elba Lane in 1961 before finally settling at 865 Springfield Road in 1962. Through the years, St Michael’s has seen numerous head teachers, dedicated staff, and a student body eager to learn. While the school’s locations have changed, its commitment to education has remained constant.
