Centuries of silence permeate this stone. The 殉教碑 Stone stands as a somber reminder of a turbulent past. It is a memorial marking the execution of Christians in Kyoto.

In 1619, fifty-two Christians were burned at the stake here. Their martyrdoms stand as testament to faith. The 殉教碑 Stone was erected in July 1994. It marks this harrowing event.

Let’s rewind to the late 16th century. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Fushimi Castle in 1592. The Christian faith then spread through Fushimi. It had become the country’s political center. But this growth was short-lived.

Persecution soon followed. It spread throughout the land. Captured Christians faced public humiliation. They were paraded through Kyobashi and Kyo-machi. These were busy areas filled with onlookers.

A prison existed north of Fushimi Church. It held many Christians awaiting their fate. The area near the Uji River became a site of martyrdom. Christians met their end near Kangetsu Bridge. This occurred during the Tokugawa period.

Takayama Ukon was a notable figure during this era. He was expelled from Japan in 1614. This expulsion followed the general prohibition on Christianity. He died in Manila in 1615.

Even after attempts to erase Christianity, traces remained. Fushimi’s streets and canals helped locate these sites. They survived from its time as a castle town. Comparing old documents with place names helped.

One intriguing item survived. It is a Christian lantern passed down through generations. The Fukui Genzaburo family owned it. They ran an officially appointed inn. The lantern features cross-like designs. Some figures resemble Christ or Mary. Believers likely hid these lanterns. They prayed in secret during times of suppression.

The 殉教碑 Stone, erected near the Kamo River, serves as a stark reminder. The persecution of Christians occurred in Kyoto. It marks a time of religious conflict. It stands for resilience. It symbolizes the enduring power of faith. Take a moment. Reflect on the lives lost. Remember the stories etched in this stone.
