“A library? In the desert?” a young boy’s voice echoed. That’s how many first-time visitors react when they see the West Las Vegas Library rising from the sun-drenched landscape. The West Las Vegas Library has been a beacon of knowledge and community for 50 years. It stands as a testament to the power of community activism and the pursuit of knowledge. In the early 1970s, community activist Ruby Duncan and members of the Guy Center and Operation Life Inc. rallied for a library in their neighborhood. Their goal was simple: to bring the joy of reading and learning to the children of West Las Vegas. Their efforts led to the opening of the first West Las Vegas Library on D Street in 1973. This initial library was a renovated building, funded in part by First Western Savings and Loan. It quickly became a popular hub, serving over 1,000 customers in a single month just seven months after opening. As Las Vegas expanded in the late 1980s, so did the need for a larger library. The current West Las Vegas Library, located at 951 West Lake Mead Boulevard, opened its doors in 1989. This 16,000-square-foot building, built on land owned by the City of Las Vegas, became a symbol of the community’s growth and progress. Ruby Duncan, along with other community advocates, was recognized for her pivotal role in bringing this vital resource to West Las Vegas. The West Las Vegas Library is more than just books. It houses the African American Special Collection, which focuses on the Black experience in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the West. This collection celebrates the rich history and contributions of African Americans to the community and beyond. Over the years, the West Las Vegas Library has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of its patrons. From introducing self-service check-in and check-out machines to creating a dedicated Homework Help Center and Teen Zone, the library strives to provide a welcoming and enriching environment for all. The West Las Vegas Library continues to thrive, circulating an average of 36,000 items per year. It has truly become a cornerstone of the West Las Vegas community.
