Fourteen million years ago, a mastodon grazed peacefully. It was unaware of the legacy it would leave behind at a place we now call the Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas. This site, located on the Somosaguas campus in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, is a window into the Miocene epoch. The Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas is more than just a collection of fossils. It’s a storybook of ancient life, whispered through the bones of long-extinct creatures. The Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas consists of two areas: Somosaguas Norte and Somosaguas Sur. These areas, separated by 60 meters, paint a vivid picture of the diverse ecosystem that thrived here millions of years ago. In 1989, a geology student made a serendipitous discovery. While waiting for his girlfriend near the Faculty of Political Sciences, he stumbled upon bone fragments. This accidental find led to the unearthing of the Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas. The site has yielded a treasure trove of fossils, from micromammals like the tiny Microdyromys koenigswaldi to the massive mastodon Gomphotherium angustidens. Remains of rhinoceroses, horses, carnivores, and even birds have also been found at the Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas. These discoveries allow us to reconstruct the environment and climate of the Middle Miocene. Evidence suggests a cooling climate and increasing aridity during this period. The fossils of the Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas even reveal details about the animals’ diets. Analysis shows that Anchitherium horses grazed on herbaceous plants, while Gomphotherium mastodons had a more varied diet. Conohyus, an ancient suid, displayed omnivorous tendencies. The Yacimiento paleontológico de Somosaguas is a testament to the power of accidental discoveries. It reminds us that the past is always present, waiting to be unearthed and understood. The fossils here offer not just a glimpse into the Miocene, but also a deeper appreciation for the intricate web of life that connects us to our ancient past.
