A hushed reverence hangs in the air. We stand before the First Shearith Israel Graveyard. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s a sacred space a living testament to history.

This small plot near Chatham Square holds the echoes of centuries. It is the oldest Jewish graveyard in Manhattan. Imagine the lives lived and lost buried here. The oldest headstone dates back to 1683. It marks the final resting place of Benjamin Bueno de Mesquita.

For over a century this land served as the final resting place for all of New York City’s Jewish community. They were members of the Shearith Israel congregation. Among those buried here were notable figures. Reverend Gershom Mendes Seixas the first American-born Jewish spiritual leader rests here. So too does Dr Walter Jonas Judah. He was one of the first native-born Jews to attend an American medical school. Even during the Revolutionary War this cemetery held significance. In 1776 a letter from General George Washington’s staff recommended placing an artillery battery near the graveyard. American prisoners of war were later buried in entrenchments nearby.

The graveyard’s history is one of constant change. Encroaching development and public health concerns forced the congregation to reduce the cemetery’s size multiple times. Bodies were moved to other cemeteries. The most significant event occurred in 1855 when eminent domain seized a large portion. This allowed for the expansion of the Bowery. Around 256 graves were removed in the process.

Today only a fraction of the original cemetery remains. About a hundred headstones and tombs survive. Yet within these modest confines lies a profound history. It’s a tangible link to New York’s past its earliest Jewish settlers and the nation’s founding. This small space offers a glimpse into a vibrant community’s enduring legacy. The First Shearith Israel Graveyard stands as a poignant reminder of the city’s ever shifting landscape and the stories it holds.
