Pargolovo’s history stretches back centuries. It was once a northern suburb of the city. The name Pargolovo comes from Parkola. This is a Karelian placename. By 2010, its population was 15,852.
Empress Elizabeth gifted the Pargolovo manor to Peter Ivanovich Shuvalov in 1746. He was the starting member of the junior line of the Counts Shuvalov. His Baroque palace saw a transformation. Stepan Krichinsky rebuilt it. It became a Neoclassical villa. This was for Count Illarion Ivanovich Vorontsov-Dashkov. He was the estate’s last owner. Harald Julius von Bosse designed a smaller palace in the mid-19th century.
The Shuvalov Park holds many treasures. There is a network of old ponds and the Yellow Dacha. Maximilian Messmacher designed this wooden lodge for his family. Parnassus hill once offered capital views. Alexander Brullov designed the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul. It was built in the 1840s in Gothic Revival style. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov married Nadezhda Purgold here in 1872.
West of Pargolovo lies the Northern Cemetery. It is the second largest in Saint Petersburg. The cemetery was established in 1874. Georgy Gapon and Vasily Vereshchagin are buried here. Also Vladimir Propp and Mikhail Artamonov rest here. Alexander Belov and Sergey Filippov are buried here too.
