A majestic church rises before us. This is the Église du Sacré-Coeur. It stands proudly at the corner of Rue Nationale and Rue Solférino in Lille. This church will charm you both from the outside and inside.
Let’s step back in time to the late 19th century. The Église du Sacré-Coeur was built then. Its construction spanned from 1875 to 1898. Jules Batigny, a French architect, designed this impressive structure.
The story behind the Église du Sacré-Coeur’s creation is quite interesting. The Dames de l’association des Enfants de Marie du Sacré-Coeur made a vow. They prayed in the Chapelle des Dames du Sacré-Coeur on Rue Royale. This vow sought to protect Lille from Prussian invasion in 1870. About ten years later, a second vow was made. Some ladies wanted a chapel dedicated to the Sacré-Coeur. This would be a place for specific contemplation inside the church.
In 1902, Monseigneur Étienne-Marie-Alphonse Sonnois dedicated Lille to the Sacré-Coeur de Jésus. At that time, Lille was part of the diocese of Cambrai. A major congress of the Garde d’Honneur du Sacré-Coeur happened in 1910. Monseigneur François-Marie-Joseph Delamaire presided over it.
Look up and admire the bell tower. It reaches a height of 75 meters. However, it wasn’t completed until the mid-20th century. Architect Sarazin finished it. It was built with reinforced concrete. Sadly, the elements took their toll. The tower was completely restored between 2005 and 2008.
The Église du Sacré-Coeur is one of Lille’s largest churches. It is 90 meters long. It is 24 meters wide. The main vault soars 22 meters high. Its style is Neo-Gothic. The church has a basilica plan. A small garden is also accessible.
Inside the Église du Sacré-Coeur, you’ll find remarkable stained glass. Eleven stained-glass windows are classified as historical monuments since 1983. These are located in the Chapelle du voeu. They were crafted in the Atelier Lorin in Chartres around 1890. Charles Crauk, a painter, designed them.
These windows depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Admire the details like Moses making water spring from the rock. See the multiplication of the loaves. Observe Jesus resurrected appearing to Thomas.
Two other chapels are dedicated to Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. These chapels have stained glass too. The Lorin workshops created them in 1890. They show scenes from Saint Joseph’s life. They also show the 15 mysteries of the Rosary.
The Église du Sacré-Coeur also boasts an English accompaniment organ. It dates back to the late 19th century. The church has furniture made by Charles Buisine-Rigot in Neo-Gothic style.
The Église du Sacré-Coeur stands as a testament to faith. It also shows artistic dedication. Its history reflects Lille’s own story. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Think about the vows made here long ago.
