St. Gabriel’s Church has witnessed significant moments. It is more than just a building. St. Gabriel’s Church is a testament to faith and community.

The original St. Gabriel Street Presbyterian Church was built in 1792. It stood at the southwest corner of St. Gabriel and Champs-de-Mars. Imagine Montreal in those early days. The church played a vital role in the lives of its members.

In 1886, St. Gabriel Street Church moved. The new location was on the south side of St. Catherine Street. This relocation marked a new chapter for the congregation.

The church sold its building in 1909. It merged with Chalmers’ Presbyterian Church. Together, they formed the First Presbyterian Church. This merger symbolized unity.

Several prominent figures supported St. Gabriel Street Church. James McGill, John Richardson and Benaiah Gibb were among them. Simon McTavish also supported it. These merchants shaped Montreal’s early landscape.

The first minister was the Rev. John Young. He served from 1792 to 1802. His leadership guided the church during its formative years. Other notable ministers followed. Henry Esson served from 1815 to 1844. He was also a chaplain of the St. Andrew’s Society. Alexander Ferrie Kemp served from 1855 to 1866. He was a Vice-President of the Natural History Society. Robert Campbell wrote “A History of the Scotch Presbyterian Church, St. Gabriel St.” in 1887.

The establishment of Saint-Gabriel Catholic Parish occurred later. It was established in 1873. Camille Provost was the constructor involved in the construction. The building we see today was achieved in 1895.

St. Gabriel’s Church stands as a reminder. It reminds us of Montreal’s evolving religious landscape. Its story reflects the city’s diverse heritage.

Consider the dedication of those who built and maintained St. Gabriel’s Church. Their efforts created a lasting legacy. The church’s history is a tapestry woven with faith.
