Who was Tankut Öktem? Here at the Kara Harp Okulu, before the monumental Harbiyeli Şehitler Anıtı, we unravel the story of this remarkable sculptor. Tankut Öktem, born in Konya in 1940, dedicated his life to capturing the spirit of Turkey through bronze and stone. The Harbiyeli Şehitler Anıtı, completed between 1995 and 1997, stands as a powerful tribute to the fallen officers of the Turkish Armed Forces. Tankut Öktem didn’t simply create statues. He crafted narratives. He breathed life into historical events and national heroes. He wanted to connect his audience with the heart of Turkey’s story. Öktem’s artistic journey started early. His mother, one of Turkey’s first female veterinarians, recognized his talent when he was just three years old. His father, also a veterinarian, encouraged him, despite concerns about the stability of an artist’s life. Öktem even earned a degree in economics alongside his art studies, a testament to his father’s practicality. But art was his true calling. He won first prize in the World Young Sculptors Competition while still a student. He honed his skills, first in ceramics, then monumentally in sculpture. Tankut Öktem’s monumental works dot the Turkish landscape. Many of Turkey’s Cumhuriyet (Republic) Monuments in city squares are his creations. His most famous work, the Kuvâ-yi Milliye Anıtı in Manisa, is among the tallest monuments in the world, a soaring tribute to Turkey’s War of Independence. Here at the Kara Harp Okulu, the Harbiyeli Şehitler Anıtı showcases Öktem’s mastery of detail and emotion. Over 700 figures compose this sprawling scene. Each tells a story of service, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of the Turkish military. Tragically, Tankut Öktem died in a car accident in Istanbul in 2007. He was working on a sculpture of Barış Akarsu, a rock musician who also died in a car accident. It is a poignant reminder of life’s fragility, even as we stand before monuments that speak of enduring strength and national identity. As you gaze at this powerful monument by Tankut Öktem, remember the stories it tells. Remember the artist who dedicated his life to bringing those stories to life.
