“Got a sample?” That question echoes in the halls of the West Laboratory Area. It is not just a question. It represents the cutting-edge research and diagnostic power within these walls. Welcome to the West Laboratory Area, a hub of medical innovation.
This area stands as a testament to China’s advancements in laboratory medicine. It is a place where science meets patient care. The Laboratory Medicine Department of West China Hospital reorganized in 2003. It now features five specialized labs. These labs include clinical biochemistry, clinical examination, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnosis.
In 2010, the department became a key special clinical examination department. The Ministry of Health recognized its achievements. By 2018, it ranked third among Chinese hospitals for examination specialties. Today, the West Laboratory Area is China’s most advanced laboratory medicine center. It handles a huge number of tests using advanced techniques. They can test nearly 600 items and complete over 20,000 samples daily. Their motto reflects their dedication: “Excellent techniques, accurate testing results, and superior services.”
The West Laboratory Area boasts a high-level team of 134 staff members. This includes 29 senior staff. There are also 62 mid-level staff. 52 staff members hold a doctoral degree or higher. 25 have master’s degrees. The area has pioneered several medical examination platforms. These include platforms for drug effect analysis, transplantation immune tolerance, and single-gene inheritance diseases. They also have platforms for hematologic tumors, tuberculosis, and HIV. This comprehensive system covers everything. This includes early screening, lab-assisted diagnosis, and clinical treatment monitoring.
In June 2006, the Laboratory Medicine Department achieved a significant milestone. It was accredited by the American CAP. It became the first clinical medicine experimental center in China to achieve this. It consistently passed CAP accreditation reviews in subsequent years.
The West Laboratory Area actively participates in quality assessments. Its coverage reaches nearly 100%. It maintains high pass rates. They have also established international collaborations. Partners include the Erasmus Medical Center in Holland and the Mayo Medical Center in the United States.
The department has secured numerous national and provincial projects. They have also obtained patents. Their staff contributes significantly to academic publications. They also help develop industrial standards for the state. The West Laboratory Area plays a crucial role in education. They train undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students, and resident physicians.
Beyond research and training, the West Laboratory Area extends its expertise to grassroots levels. They train laboratorians from various provinces. They also provide training subsidies to personnel from earthquake-affected regions. They offer testing skill trainings to hospitals. Additionally, they dispatch technical personnel to serve in grassroots hospitals.
Stepping out of the West Laboratory Area, one can’t help but feel the weight of its contributions to medical science. It is more than just a laboratory. It is a beacon of hope, a center of innovation, and a testament to China’s commitment to healthcare excellence.
