Standing tall and proud, the Torre Garibaldi B pierces the Milanese sky. It’s a true icon of the city, a testament to both its modern architectural prowess and its complex and fascinating history. This impressive structure, a glass and limestone beacon, is one of two towers that grace the Porta Nuova Garibaldi district. In the past, it was known as Torre B, but today, the whole world calls it Torre Garibaldi B, paying homage to the Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi who fought for the unification of Italy in the 19th century. Don’t let the name fool you though, the Torre Garibaldi B wasn’t built to commemorate Garibaldi. He died in 1882, and the tower, an office building, was built much later between 1984 and 1992. The two towers, Torre Garibaldi A and Torre Garibaldi B, were designed by the architects Laura Lazzari and Giancarlo Perotta and were originally intended to serve as offices for Trenitalia, the Italian national railway company. However, the towers weren’t always graced by the sleek and modern facade that we see today. In the early 2000s, they were actually painted a rather dull orange and had mixed glass and solid roofing. The two towers even had different-shaped roofs – Torre Garibaldi A had a concave roof, representing the female, and Torre Garibaldi B had a convex one, symbolizing the male. But in 2012, the entire complex was renovated. The two towers were given a spectacular face-lift, and now boast a minimalist and modern style. This transformation even included the addition of solar panels and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, making the tower self-sufficient in energy. Nowadays, the Torre Garibaldi B serves as an office building for the Maire Tecnimont company, an engineering and construction firm. The tower stands as a symbol of transformation – a timeless relic that has gracefully adapted to the changing times. From its humble beginnings to its modern heights, the Torre Garibaldi B represents Milan’s spirit of innovation and renewal. So, as we leave the Torre Garibaldi B behind, take a moment to appreciate its story and its contribution to the city’s skyline, a silent witness to the city’s evolution.
