Beneath the California sun, Westfield Culver City has witnessed a dramatic transformation. Originally known as Fox Hills Mall, Westfield Culver City opened its doors on October 6, 1975. It was one of the first three-level malls in California. Developed by Ernest W. Hahn, Inc. and Carter Hawley Hale Properties, Inc., the mall boasted an innovative design. It featured a glass-and-steel “theme” staircase and angled bridges connecting its multiple levels. The initial anchor stores included The Broadway, May Co., and JCPenney, which opened slightly later in January 1976. Imagine strolling through the mall in its early days. Eighty shops, including Harris & Frank and Lerner’s, offered a diverse range of goods. The mall provided ample parking with space for 4,491 cars. Westfield Culver City wasn’t just a shopping destination. It was a community hub. In 1998, Westfield America, Inc. acquired the mall and renamed it “Westfield Shoppingtown Fox Hills”. The name was later simplified to “Westfield Fox Hills” and finally to “Westfield Culver City”. The iconic theme staircase was removed during a 2009 renovation, but the distinctive bridges remain. This $180 million revitalization included the demolition of the former Robinsons-May department store. In its place, a new wing emerged. This wing housed a Target and a Best Buy. Westfield Culver City continued to evolve. By 2023, new additions included Miniso, Lovisa, Carter’s, Uniqlo, and Intimissimi. The mall’s dining terrace has even earned praise from Los Angeles food critic Jonathan Gold, who highlighted its ethnic diversity. Westfield Culver City also offers convenient transit access. A transit center in the parking lot connects to various LACMTA and Culver CityBus lines. This makes it easy for visitors to arrive from across the city, including LAX via the Culver City route 6 bus.
