Perhaps you’ve heard of Do Bong-soon? She lived here in Dobong 1-dong. This neighborhood is a key part of the larger Dobong District. It is one of the four legal neighborhoods that make up Dobong District. Dobong 1-dong is not just a place on a map. It is a vibrant community with its own unique story.
Dobong District itself has a fascinating history. Imagine Seoul in 1973. The city was growing and changing. The government decided to split 22 neighborhoods from Seongbuk District. This created the new Dobong District. Over time, more divisions occurred. By 1979, Dobong District had expanded to 35 administrative neighborhoods.
However, this growth was not permanent. In 1988, a significant change occurred. Sixteen neighborhoods separated to form Nowon District. But Dobong-dong and Chang-dong returned to Dobong District the following year. Then in 1995, eighteen neighborhoods split off again. They formed Gangbuk District. This left Dobong District with its current 14 administrative neighborhoods, including Dobong 1-dong.
Now, let’s talk about Dobong 1-dong itself. It covers an area of 9.55 square kilometers. In 2010, it had a population of nearly 57,000 people. That is a density of about 6,000 people per square kilometer.
Dobong 1-dong has a humid continental climate. This means hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature is around 11 degrees Celsius. The area receives a good amount of precipitation, about 147 centimeters per year.
Did you know that Dobong District is known for its sock manufacturing? Many small workshops are located here. These are often in basements or homes. Chang-dong has the most factories. But you can also find many in Banghak-dong and Ssangmun-dong.
Dobong District also boasts natural beauty. Dobongsan Mountain is partly within its borders. It is a popular spot for residents to relax. The mountain has several temples, including Cheonchuksa and Wontongsa.
The district is considered a middle-to-lower tier neighborhood economically. But things are changing. New developments, like the Changdong Station GTX line, are increasing property values. The planned Seoul National University Hospital and Changdong Arena should help even more.
Transportation is convenient here. Dobong District has several railway lines. These include Korail and Seoul Metro lines. Seoul Subway Line 4 passes through Chang-dong and Ssangmun. This connects Dobong 1-dong to the rest of Seoul.
The name Do Bong-soon might ring a bell. The popular K-drama “Strong Girl Bong-soon” is set here. The character’s name is a play on the neighborhood. It connects her directly to Dobong-dong. So as you explore Dobong 1-dong, remember its history and significance.
