In 1855, a seed was planted in Newark, a seed that would blossom into the vibrant Kean University we stand before today. Initially, this seed took the form of the Newark Normal School, a humble teacher’s college established as the first public post-secondary institution in New Jersey. Imagine those early students, eager to shape young minds, attending classes on Saturdays. Kean University has come a long way since those days. The university relocated to its current location, the historic Livingston-Kean Estate in Union, in 1958. This move marked a turning point, transforming the institution from a teacher’s college into Newark State College, a comprehensive center for learning. The name “Kean” honors the Kean family, whose legacy is intertwined with the history of both this land and the university. This family boasts members who have served in the U.S. Congress, the Senate, and even as Governor of New Jersey. The campus itself sits on land steeped in history. The original building, Liberty Hall, was started in 1760 by William Livingston, New Jersey’s first elected governor. During the Revolutionary War, Liberty Hall served as a residence for both Livingston and Alexander Hamilton. It even played a role in the Battle of Connecticut Farms, bearing the scars of both British and American forces. Later, the estate passed through the hands of prominent families, including the Kean family, who ultimately sold the land to the state. Today, Kean University is a bustling hub of activity, with over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university continues its strong tradition in education, while also expanding into fields like business, healthcare, and technology. It offers over 50 undergraduate degrees and numerous graduate programs, providing accessible, world-class education. Kean University also has a unique global presence, being the only public university in the United States with a campus in China. Wenzhou-Kean University offers an English-speaking education to a mix of Chinese, American, and international students. As you explore the campus, take a moment to appreciate the journey of Kean University, from a small teacher’s college to the thriving institution it is today. The legacy of learning continues, nurtured by the echoes of history and the promise of the future.
