Did Starr Playground always offer such modern amenities? No. Starr Playground, nestled between Onderdonk and Willoughby Avenues, first opened on Christmas Day in 1947. It was the 501st playground in the New York City Parks system. Its creation was part of a massive expansion of parks and playgrounds during the 1930s. This expansion was fueled by federal aid through the Works Progress Administration. The city acquired the land for Starr Playground in 1936. Jurisdiction was transferred to the Parks Department between 1940 and 1942.
Starr Playground’s early days were a far cry from its current state. Imagine children playing on asphalt, surrounded by sandboxes, see-saws, and metallic jungle gyms. These were common features of playgrounds built during that era under Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. The playground also included swing sets, slides, and areas for sports. These included two handball courts, a full basketball court, and an asphalt softball court. There was even a stone turtle statue.
Time marched on, and Starr Playground, like the city around it, changed. By 2018, the park showed signs of wear and tear. Drainage issues caused flooding after rain. The basketball courts, a popular spot, were worn down. The handball court was at an awkward angle. This put strain on players’ knees. Residents and the Friends of Starr Playground advocated for improvements. Their voices were heard. In 2016, funding was secured for a much-needed renovation.
The renovation of Starr Playground began in 2020. The project cost $2.3 million. It transformed the park into the clean, modern space you see today. The playground is now equipped with brand new equipment. It also features distinct sections and an adjacent ballfield. The park includes sensory elements, a balance beam, and climbing sections. There’s a tall slide and an even taller fireman’s pole. Benches, adult and kid-sized picnic tables, and a double-fenced enclosure enhance the park. While some trees offer shade around the tables, much of the playground is exposed to the sun. It’s best to avoid visiting during the hottest parts of the day.
Starr Playground has come a long way since its humble beginnings. It stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to providing recreational spaces for its residents. As the sun sets, casting long shadows across the playground, take a moment to appreciate its journey. From its Depression-era origins to its modern incarnation, Starr Playground continues to serve the community. It provides a place for children to play, adults to relax, and memories to be made.
