Gazing upon Capela de São Félix, one might hear whispers of bygone eras. This 18th-century chapel, nestled within the former Quinta de São Félix de Picoutos, stands as a testament to a rich history. Capela de São Félix was once the private chapel of the family who owned the quinta. The chapel’s simple facade, flanked by pilasters, belies the intricate details within. Inside Capela de São Félix, light streams through three windows, illuminating the single nave and vaulted ceiling. The gilded altarpiece, with its Solomonic columns adorned with grapes, phoenixes, and cherubs, commands attention. The columns are entwined with symbolic carvings. These carvings include bunches of grapes and mythical phoenixes. Playful cherubs further enhance the ornate design. Originally, three niches within the altarpiece housed statues. Now, only a statue of a Jesuit saint, possibly Saint Cajetan, remains. The original statues, including that of the patron saint, São Félix, are lost to time. The families who owned the quinta, the Sousa Félix and later the Sousa Lopes, used Capela de São Félix as their burial place from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s. This practice suggests the chapel was likely built between 1750 and 1775. The once grand Quinta de São Félix, with its noble houses, stables, gardens, and orchards, is now gone. Only Capela de São Félix remains, a solitary sentinel amid modern housing, a poignant reminder of the past. The surrounding Quinta de São Félix met its demise as it was parceled and developed into residential lots. In 1982, Matosinhos City Council purchased the remaining land. What we see today is the result of extensive urbanization. The original estate is now overlaid with a network of streets and houses. Capela de São Félix itself underwent restoration in 1993. In 1994, the gilded altarpiece was installed and the surroundings were landscaped. Capela de São Félix now stands in quiet dignity. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the families who once worshipped and were laid to rest here.
