A chilling premonition hung in the air at Ballagarey Corner. It was 2010. The Isle of Man TT was underway. Ballagarey Corner, nestled between the third and fourth milemarkers of the Snaefell Mountain Course, was a deceptively fast right-hand curve on the A1 Douglas to Peel road. The corner, also known as Elm Bank, had a long history with motorsport. It was part of the Highland Course and the Four Inch Course used for car and motorcycle races in the early 1900s. Now, it was a key part of the TT Mountain Course. Racer Guy Martin, just minutes after a pit stop, approached Ballagarey at high speed. His bike, carrying a full tank of fuel, crashed. It exploded into a fireball. The day before, New Zealand rider Paul Dobbs had suffered a fatal accident at the very same spot. Keith Amor, riding close behind Martin, saw the smoke and the marshals running. He had to ride through the immediate aftermath of the fiery crash. Martin, miraculously, escaped serious injury. He was airlifted to hospital with bruising to his lungs and minor fractures to his upper spine. Ballagarey Corner, despite its innocuous appearance on the quiet A1 road, had shown its teeth once again. The high speeds and unforgiving nature of the corner had earned it a grim nickname among racers: “Ballascarey”. A sobering reminder of the risks inherent in the thrilling world of motorcycle racing, etched forever into the history of Ballagarey Corner.
