“The bird chirping in our mind is comforted” The words from the Osaka Nanko Bird Sanctuary’s website echo in my mind. We stand before the Osaka Nanko Bird Sanctuary a haven for avian life in the heart of Osaka.
This sanctuary wasn’t always a haven. It began as part of the Sakishima land reclamation project in the 1940s. By 1969 the undeveloped area attracted many waterfowl and shorebirds. NGOs saw its potential. They began improving and conserving the area creating a haven for migratory birds.
Imagine these birds. They breed in northern China Mongolia Siberia and Alaska. They journey thousands of kilometers to Australia and Indonesia for winter. Osaka Nanko Bird Sanctuary provides crucial rest stops on these epic migrations. The Japanese government recognizes this. They’ve made commitments to protect migratory birds and their habitats.
The sanctuary opened in 1983. It’s a 19-hectare woodland park. It boasts ponds a lagoon artificial tidal flats and salt marshes. You can’t always walk among the birds directly. Two towers offer incredible views. The main indoor facility has amazing windows for birdwatching. Powerful telescopes are available for a small fee. Information boards and computers share data about the many visitors. A library and a meeting room cater to bird enthusiasts and researchers.
From 1983 to 2002 236 bird species were recorded here. Over 50 were shorebirds. Studies from 2000-2002 identified 134 species of benthos. That means shellfish snails worms and crabs. This biodiversity proves the health of the wetland ecosystem.
The Osaka Nanko Bird Sanctuary educates the public about wetlands and water birds. Classes for students and informal events for everyone are held regularly. Local organizations and government agencies organize birdwatching events. These are opportunities to get involved in conservation efforts. They remove Ulva seaweed and litter four times a year.
This is more than just a place to observe birds. It’s a testament to conservation efforts. It’s a place where we can connect with nature’s beauty and the incredible journeys of migratory birds. Now let’s listen to the chirping. Let us appreciate the wonder of the Osaka Nanko Bird Sanctuary.
