Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? The Altes Rathaus in Stralsund whispers tales of centuries past. Right before you stands a masterpiece of North German brick Gothic architecture. Its construction began in the 13th century a testament to the city’s growing power.

The Altes Rathaus is more than just a pretty building. It’s a symbol of Stralsund’s rich past. For centuries it served not only as the seat of the city council and a place of justice but also as a bustling marketplace. Its six-aisled vaulted cellar once served as a cloth hall. Imagine merchants bartering for fine fabrics. The ground floor housed shops a vibrant hub of commerce. The northern part facing the Alter Markt boasts a famous show facade. This area includes a two-aisled vaulted hall on the ground floor.

Above this hall lies the Löwenischer Saal. Originally the meeting room of the city’s elite this magnificent hall now holds echoes of important decisions. Look closely at the large windows on the market front. The coats of arms of Hanseatic cities like Wismar Lübeck Hamburg Greifswald Rostock and of course Stralsund themselves point to Stralsund’s vital role in the maritime trade. Historians believe the single-aisled vaulted hall in the southern section housed the city’s court. The hall above was likely the council chamber.

Over the centuries the Altes Rathaus underwent many changes. A Renaissance staircase was added in 1579 leading to the administrative offices. A devastating fire in 1680 replaced the copper roof with tiles. The long passageway through the Rathaus was enhanced with an attractive Baroque gallery in the 17th century. The Baroque portal with its heraldic crest is a remarkable architectural achievement.

From 1990 to 2011 the Rathaus underwent extensive restoration. The result is truly breathtaking. Parts of the facade and the historical vaults on the ground and upper floors have been meticulously restored. The cellar also gleams in renewed splendor. Today the upper floor houses the political center of Stralsund including the city council the council president the parliamentary groups and the mayor’s office. And did you know it also houses the city’s registry office? Countless couples have said “I do” within these historic walls.

One of the largest Gothic cellars in the entire Baltic Sea region at 1300 square meters. The Rathauskeller has become a real visitor magnet. It hosts fresh produce and themed markets. The annual arts and crafts market during the Christmas season is particularly popular. The ground floor also attracts locals tourists and spontaneous visitors with its shops and a restaurant. So take a moment to soak in the rich history and architectural beauty of the Altes Rathaus. It’s a place where the past comes alive.
