“Ever noticed how schools become cornerstones of communities?” asks a local resident near Ichihara City. Today we are visiting Ichihara City Shimizu Elementary School. This school is more than just a place of learning. It is a vital part of the Chiba community.

Ichihara City Shimizu Elementary School is located in Chiba Prefecture. Specifically it is in the Chiharadai Minami area of Ichihara City. The school’s name in Japanese is Ichihara Shiritsu Shimizu Elementary School.

Established in 1994 the school was built in response to the development of the Chiharadai New Town. It was initially known as Provisional Chiharadai Number Two Elementary School. Within the new town Ichihara City Shimizu Elementary School was the second elementary school. The first was Ichihara City Water Egawa Elementary School.

Ichihara City Shimizu Elementary School sits near the center of the new town. Its district extends slightly westward from the center. Notably the adjacent land houses Ichihara City Chiharadai Minami Junior High School. The elementary school’s district includes areas of the Chiharadai Nishi Junior High School district.

Interestingly the average annual income of families sending children to Ichihara City Shimizu Elementary School is the highest in the city. In the past the school had to split off from Ichihara City Bokuen Elementary School due to increasing student numbers.

In 2022 the school had 546 students. There were 23 classes. The school district covers 1.073 square kilometers. It serves a population of 7977 residents.

The school badge is rich in symbolism. Green represents eternal life energy. Blue symbolizes independence. Red writing signifies passion. The green semicircle indicates the separation from Water Egawa Elementary School. The central spring symbolizes the clear spring waters of Chiharadai which inspired the school’s name. The school hopes to be a fresh and vibrant place like this spring.

The school buildings are earthquake-resistant. The main buildings were constructed in 1994. These include school buildings and a gymnasium. There are also storage and placement areas built in later years.

In 2003 the music club received the Yamaha Award. This was at the East Japan School Wind Music Assembly Festival. The school also has a children’s club that provides after-school care.

Ichihara City Shimizu Elementary School is more than bricks and mortar. It is a place of growth learning and community. The school continues to uphold its motto to nurture students who are gentle strong and dependable.
