Amidst the vibrant energy of New York City, Full Gospel Central Church stands as a testament to resilience and renewal. Full Gospel Central Church’s story is one of transformation. It’s a story of a church that has seen periods of decline and remarkable resurgence. Full Gospel Central Church’s journey began in 1821. A young 22-year-old Reverend William Patton, fresh out of Princeton Theological Seminary, founded the church. He started with just his wife, Mary, and four other individuals. This small group laid the foundation for what would become a significant presence in the city. The church’s early years were marked by rapid growth. This necessitated several relocations to accommodate the expanding congregation. From Broome Street to 7th Avenue and then to Madison Avenue, Full Gospel Central Church adapted to the changing demographics of the city. A pivotal moment in the church’s history arrived with the construction of its current building on Park Avenue. John D. Rockefeller Jr. commissioned and funded the building in 1922. It was originally intended for the Park Avenue Baptist Church. However, the building soon proved too small for the Baptist congregation. This led Rockefeller to build the Riverside Church. This presented an opportunity for Full Gospel Central Church to acquire the almost new Park Avenue building. Interestingly, the church had to hold services at the Plaza Hotel while waiting for Riverside Church’s completion. Finally, on September 22, 1929, Full Gospel Central Church held its first service in its new Park Avenue home. The church’s history also includes a magnificent 53-bell carillon. Rockefeller commissioned it as a memorial to his mother. The carillon was later transferred to Riverside Church, but the bell tower remains a prominent feature of the church’s architecture. Despite its rich history, Full Gospel Central Church faced a period of decline in the latter half of the 20th century. By the early 2000s, attendance dwindled. The building fell into disrepair. However, the story doesn’t end there. In 2006, a dedicated group of Christians began attending Full Gospel Central Church. They embarked on a mission to revitalize the church. Their efforts proved successful, and the church experienced a remarkable renewal. Full Gospel Central Church has since doubled its membership, weekly attendance, and contributions. It has become a vibrant, diverse community. Full Gospel Central Church’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It stands as a beacon of hope and transformation in the heart of New York City.
