Tucked away in the bustling heart of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Church of Jesus Christ stands as a modern marvel. It’s a striking newcomer to this historic city, completed just in 2016. The Philadelphia Church of Jesus Christ isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to architectural ingenuity and a fascinating blend of old and new. This is the first temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pennsylvania. It bridges a gap, being the first such temple between Washington, D.C., and New York City. Its location in Logan Square places it amidst a rich tapestry of historical landmarks. Imagine, right here, where we stand, the buzz of activity during the groundbreaking ceremony in 2011. Led by Henry B. Eyring, the event marked the beginning of a remarkable construction journey. The design of the Philadelphia Church of Jesus Christ is a story in itself. The church initially commissioned a contemporary design. However, they ultimately opted for a neoclassical style by FFKR Architects, with Perkins+Will designing the interiors and surrounding spaces. The architects drew inspiration from iconic Philadelphia buildings. They incorporated elements like Christ Church’s tower, Independence Hall’s interior, and the Franklin Institute. The result is a building that feels both timeless and distinctly Philadelphian. The exterior is clad in light gray Deer Island granite. This sets it apart from many other temples and echoes the material used in nearby structures. The Corinthian detailing adds a touch of classical elegance. The temple grounds are adorned with forty-four Japanese maple trees, adding a splash of color to the granite façade. Inside, the Georgian style reflects the early history of both the United States and the LDS Church. The Philadelphia Church of Jesus Christ isn’t just a standalone structure. It’s part of a larger complex that includes a meetinghouse and a 32-story residential building. This addition further integrates the church into the fabric of the city. The public open house in 2016 drew an impressive 140,000 visitors. They got a glimpse inside this magnificent building before its dedication. The Philadelphia Church of Jesus Christ has garnered significant praise. Inga Saffron, architecture critic for The Philadelphia Inquirer, called it “the most radical work of architecture built in Philadelphia in a half-century”. The temple has also received accolades. These include the Trumbauer Award for Excellence in Contemporary Classicism and an award for Excellence in Craftsmanship. The Philadelphia Church of Jesus Christ is more than just a building. It is a testament to history, design, and community.
