Remember when Avalon Gardens was built? Constructed in 1941 during World War II, Avalon Gardens emerged as a housing project for military families and veterans. It was built for $638,000. The Avalon Gardens Neighborhood Engagement Area is located in the Green Meadows section of Los Angeles. The borders are Caliburn Drive to the North, 88th Place to the South, McKinley Avenue to the East, and Avalon Boulevard to the West.

Avalon Gardens comprises 164 quality, affordable housing units. The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles owns and manages them. In 1947, Avalon Gardens opened to low-income residents. There was a significant waiting list to get into the newly built homes. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the residents transitioned from military to low-income families.

The Avalon Gardens CSP Team collaborates with HACLA, local residents, and community-based partners. They work to support a healthy quality of life for all community members. From 1971 to 1973, the Jonathan Jackson Educational Cadre educated the youth. They developed a reading program and the George Jackson Karate class. Afterwards, they would march the youth around the project. They would sing songs about unity and screen political education films. The youth were also served food. There is a documentary about the group called Jackson Not Just A Name.

Avalon Gardens faced challenges in the early 1970s. It became the turf of the Avalon Garden Crips gang, led by Jimel Barnes. The buildings began to deteriorate in the late 1970s and experienced increased crime. By the early 1990s, it was labeled a war zone. Drug activity and violence dominated the area.

In 1996, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles implemented a $1.7-million project. A decorative wrought-iron fence and an 11-foot-high wall were built around the complex. This was to decrease crime and gang activity. After completion, Avalon Gardens became a gated community. Crime and gang violence decreased.

Today, Avalon Gardens is more than just a housing project. It is a community. Several community programs exist. There is a School Supply Give-Away, Watts Rams, Watts Skills Academy. There is also Watts Surfing Club, Yoga, Youth Soccer Club, and Zumba. Avalon Gardens has evolved through different phases. It started as a haven for military families, transitioned to low-income housing, and faced challenges with crime. Today, it stands as a testament to community resilience.
