Founded in 1875 Ebenezer Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Reverend C Ward organized the church in the home of Mrs Elisa Hawkins. Eighteen devoted members formed its foundation. They included Martha Carrington Maggie Bucker and Queen Shaw among others. Their dedication laid the cornerstone for a congregation that would grow and evolve over time.
Initially housed in a modest frame structure at Catalpa and Curve streets the church quickly outgrew its space. A brick sanctuary with stained glass windows was built in 1885 at East Tenth and San Marcos streets. Mrs Henrietta Willis appropriately named it Ebenezer meaning Stone of Help a fitting title for a church that provided spiritual support and community to its members.
The church continued to expand. In 1915 a stucco tabernacle was erected. Later under Reverend Jerome C Lott the congregation planned for further growth. The current sanctuary and education complex were built between 1950 and 1955 under Reverend Robert L Rowe’s leadership. His ministry spanned from 1949 to 1968. The limestone and brick structure showcases a Gothic design. Its tower holds the bell from the original brick church a tangible link to the past. A parsonage was also built during Rowe’s tenure at 1203 Cotton Street.
Ebenezer Baptist Church’s history is intertwined with the acquisition of various properties. These include the south parking lot in 1971 and subsequent purchases throughout the late 1980s. The Brady property became home to the East Austin Economic Development Corporation. Dr Marvin C Griffin’s leadership facilitated a partnership combining daycare economic development and private investment exceeding $1000000.
The church boasts a rich musical heritage. Virgie Carrington Dewitty served as Music Director for over fifty years. She led the Ebenezer Choir the first Black choir on a commercial Texas radio program in 1938. Known as The Bright and Early Choir it further enriched the church’s legacy. The adult choirs merged in 1981 to form the Sanctuary Choir. Today the Music Ministry includes handbell choirs and choral groups showcasing Ebenezer’s continued commitment to music.
Reverend Dr Marvin C Griffin served for forty-two years retiring in 2011. Reverend Rodney L Swisher served as interim pastor until Reverend Dr Ricky Freeman became pastor in 2012. Under his leadership the church celebrated its 140th anniversary. Ebenezer Baptist Church maintains strong ties to various Baptist associations reflecting its ongoing commitment to religious fellowship and community engagement.
Ebenezer’s commitment extends beyond worship. It provides educational programs youth outreach tutorials and community service. Annual scholarships are given to college-bound students. This church continues its mission supporting its community spiritually educationally and economically. The story of Ebenezer Baptist Church is a powerful testament to faith perseverance and community.
