“Ever felt the presence of faith amidst resilience?” I ask you now, standing before St Theresa’s Church. This Catholic church in Gibraltar stands as a testament to faith. It stands as a testament to community. It’s located along Devil’s Tower Road in northeastern Gibraltar.

St Theresa’s Church has humble beginnings. It started as a converted Nissen hut. Fr Bernard Devlin acquired it. He aimed to serve the growing local population.

In 1974, St Theresa’s officially became a parish. However, its consecration waited until 2010. Bishop Ralph Heskett C.Ss.R. performed the ceremony. This event coincided with the Diocese’s 100th anniversary. Mass had been celebrated here for years before that. Parishioners gathered since the end of World War II.

Bernard Devlin played a crucial role in St Theresa’s history. He served as a priest here. Later, he became the Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar. The Gibraltar government considered honoring him. They wanted to rename Devil’s Tower Road as Bishop Devlin Lane. Ultimately, the original name was kept. In 1992, Bishop Devlin laid the foundation stone for a new church building. It marked a new chapter for the parish.

St Theresa’s Church offers regular services. On Mondays through Fridays, Mass is held at 6:00 pm. On Saturdays, there’s an anticipatory Mass at 6:00 pm. During the summer, it moves to 7:00 pm. Sunday Masses take place at 11:00 am and 6:00 pm. In the summer, an additional Mass is held at 8:00 pm. For holy days and public holidays, it is best to call the church for the schedule.

The story of St Theresa’s also reflects broader changes within the Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council brought reforms. These reforms aimed to address modern challenges. The church adapted to reflect the evolving world.

Many dedicated individuals have shaped the Diocese of Gibraltar. Don Juan Romero de Figueroa was a parish priest. He witnessed the British advance in 1704. Despite the Spanish population fleeing, he remained. He ensured the Catholic faith’s continuation.

In 1840, Fr Henry Hughes O.F.M., an Irish Franciscan, became Vicar Apostolic. He faced challenges. A Junta of Elders contested his authority. He stood firm for his ecclesial rights.

Rev. John Baptist Scandella, a Gibraltarian, succeeded Bishop Hughes. He strengthened educational initiatives. Christian Brothers and Loreto Nuns established a foundation for education. Their commitment lasted until the government took over the schools.

Today, St Theresa’s Church stands as a beacon of faith and community. Its history is intertwined with Gibraltar’s own story. It is a place where faith has been nurtured. It is a place where community has thrived. As you leave St Theresa’s, remember its simple beginnings. Remember its enduring spirit. Remember the individuals who shaped its path.
