“Can you feel it?” whispered the guide, his voice echoing in the quiet space. We were all standing right in front of the Flawn Sciences Building, a towering structure that signified the heart of UTSA’s pursuit of knowledge. The building, completed in 1975, was among the first to grace the UTSA campus. It hosted a multitude of disciplines, from physics and astronomy to chemistry and computer science. Its unique design, blending Southwestern architecture with modern features, made it stand out from its surroundings. Open areas with skylight roofs, known as galerias, brought natural light flooding into the building, offering a sense of openness and connecting the interior with the exterior. The university’s founder, Peter T. Flawn, believed that simplicity and flexibility were key to creating a space conducive to learning and discovery. This was a bold statement for a university that was still in its infancy. In the end, Flawn Sciences Building became a symbol of the university’s commitment to innovation and progress in San Antonio, a vision that continues to resonate with generations of students.
