Opened in 1977, Westfield UTC wasn’t always the gleaming shopping mecca you see today. It began as University Towne Centre, anchored by Robinson’s, the Broadway, and Sears. Westfield UTC quickly became a central hub for the University City community. Imagine San Diego in the late 1970s. The mall was a fresh, new addition to the burgeoning landscape. It offered a blend of retail therapy and social connection. In 1984, Westfield UTC expanded, adding Nordstrom and 31 new stores. This expansion solidified its status as a premier shopping destination.
Fast forward to 1989, a year that brought an unexpected international incident to Westfield UTC. A minivan belonging to William C. Rogers III, implicated in the Iran Air Flight 655 tragedy, was bombed in the mall’s parking lot. This event shook the community and brought a sobering reminder of global tensions to this local landmark.
Westfield acquired UTC in 1998, marking a new chapter in the mall’s history. That same year, both Macy’s (formerly the Broadway) and Robinsons-May expanded their presence within Westfield UTC. This demonstrated the mall’s continued growth and adaptability. J.P. Morgan Investment also acquired a 50% interest, further solidifying its financial stability.
Westfield UTC underwent a significant transformation in 2007. A $12 million remodel brought a “European village” atmosphere to the mall. Grassy areas, trellises with flowering vines, palm trees, and fountains created a more inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment.
The late 2000s brought ambitious expansion plans. Despite a temporary setback due to the Great Recession, Westfield UTC embarked on a $600 million revitalization. The first phase, completed in 2011, included a revamped dining terrace and new tenants like Forever 21, a relocated 24 Hour Fitness, and a 14-screen AMC Theatres.
In 2017, Westfield UTC celebrated the grand opening of a brand-new, two-level Nordstrom flagship store. This marked the culmination of a significant phase of expansion and modernization. The mall also welcomed a wave of new shops and restaurants, many making their San Diego debut. Westfield UTC became a culinary hotspot, attracting renowned chefs and popular eateries like Din Tai Fung and Shake Shack. This diversified the mall’s offerings and further cemented its status as a lifestyle destination.
Westfield UTC continued to evolve. The former Sears building was demolished and replaced with The Collection, a two-story structure housing high-end retailers. In 2019, the Palisades at UTC, a 23-story luxury apartment building, opened, adding a residential component to the mix. Westfield UTC isn’t just a place to shop. It’s a place to dine, to live, and to experience the vibrant energy of San Diego.
