Once a branch of the Young Women’s Hebrew Association now stands the Lincoln Correctional Facility. This building has a rich history before becoming a minimum-security men’s prison. Let’s delve into its past.
Before 1976 the building served various purposes. It housed Jewish women needing assistance starting in 1914. In 1942, the U.S. Army used it as a rest center for soldiers during World War II. Following that, the New Lincoln School and the Northside Center for Child Development occupied it. They conducted psychology research here.
In 1976, the building was transformed into the Lincoln Correctional Facility. It primarily functioned as a work-release center for drug offenders. A small percentage about 5% housed white-collar criminals. The facility had a capacity of about 275 inmates. It faced the north side of Central Park at 31-33 West 110th Street in Manhattan.
The Lincoln Correctional Facility’s role in the community was significant. It aimed to rehabilitate inmates through work-release programs. Inmates were given a chance to reintegrate into society. This was done all while serving their sentences.
However, the Lincoln Correctional Facility’s story took another turn. On May 17, 2019, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced its closure. The closure was part of the 2020 State Budget. The facility officially closed on September 1, 2019.
After its closure, speculations arose about its future. Some suggested it would be sold and converted into condos. Others proposed affordable housing or a women’s jail.
For a while the building remained vacant. But on May 29, 2023, NYC officials announced a new purpose. The state would provide the facility as temporary shelter for asylum seekers.
The Lincoln Correctional Facility’s story is one of transformation. From a haven for young women to a prison and now a shelter. This building continues to serve the community in various ways. Its walls hold stories of hope, rehabilitation, and new beginnings. As we stand here we are reminded of the ever changing landscape of our city. We also are aware of the many different stories it contains.
