Whispers of faith echo through time. Right here stands Mount Calvary Holy Church a testament to enduring spirituality. This unassuming building on Dubois Avenue holds a rich history. It’s a story of transformation. It’s a story of community. It began not in New York but far away in Winston-Salem North Carolina. In 1927 Bishop Brumfield Johnson founded Mount Calvary Holy Church. He broke away from the United Holy Church of America leading 200 followers. The church’s journey then took it to Huntington Long Island New York. A revival there led to the establishment of another branch. Finally in 1929 Bishop Johnson and his followers arrived in Boston. They officially chartered Mount Calvary Holy Church there on July 27 1929. This was not the Mount Calvary Holy Church you see before you. The building itself has a fascinating dual history. It began life as a synagogue Congregation Sharei Tfila. Built in 1915 it served a community of Eastern European Jewish immigrants in Roxbury Massachusetts. Adjacent to it stood the Roxbury Hebrew School also built by the same architect A J Carpenter. The synagogue and school formed a cohesive complex a testament to the vibrant Jewish community. In the late 1950s and 60s the demographics of the area changed. Many Jewish families relocated. In 1961 Congregation Sharei Tfila disbanded. The building then passed into the hands of Mount Calvary Holy Church an African American Pentecostal Church. This is how Mount Calvary Holy Church found its current home. This building’s story is one of many layers. It reflects the shifting population and the continuity of faith across generations and cultures. It has served as a church and a soup kitchen a beacon of hope in a changing neighbourhood. The legacy of Mount Calvary Holy Church continues to inspire. It speaks to resilience faith and the transformative power of community. So stand here today and reflect on the remarkable story of this place. Remember the prayers whispered within these walls. Embrace the enduring spirit of Mount Calvary Holy Church.
