Originally organized in Ogden Utah in 1916, New Zion Baptist Church has a rich history. It began as a mission known as Wall Avenue Baptist Church. A small red brick chapel was built in 1918. It was dedicated in May 1919.

Initially, the chapel seated 100 people. It was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention. In December 1925, members decided to incorporate the organization for 100 years. The church officially incorporated on January 5, 1926.

Several clergymen served Wall Avenue Baptist Church from 1918 to 1928. These included Reverend A. J. Billing, Reverend H. L. Marque and Reverend John W. Morris. Also serving were Reverend M. A. Eilonth, Reverend T. L. Washington, Reverend James E. Moore and Reverend D. D. Banks. The church closed but reopened in 1929. Sunday School classes were led by Sis Georgia Holt.

On October 2, 1930, Reverend Luscious A. Platt became the first pastor of Wall Avenue Baptist Church. He served for six years. Later, Reverend Jessie L. Conner and Reverend J. L. Rollerson also served as pastors.

Under Reverend Benjamin J. Washington’s leadership, the congregation grew. They needed a new church building. At the suggestion of Sis. Jimmie Lee Bell, Wall Avenue Baptist Church became New Zion Baptist Church. Reverend Washington remained pastor for about 10 years.

God has blessed New Zion through the years with faithful members. From 1961 to late 2011, New Zion had many devoted pastors. These included Rev. S. C. Miller and Rev. Lacy K. Curry. Others were Rev. Olice E. Piper, Rev. Leodis W. Watkins and Rev. Joseph S. Speech. Rev. Willie L. Davis also served.

During Rev. N. Lawrence Liggins’ tenure, the aphorism “Love Ye One Another” was adopted. In November 1979, New Zion witnessed its largest baptism. Twenty-five souls gave their life to Christ. Rev. Tyrone Seals, Rev. Isaac P. Brantley and Rev. George Merritt also served.

In 1997, Rev. James Abrams became pastor. A historical event occurred during his tenure. He ordained Rev. Michelle Dockery Boyer. She was the first female licensed as a Reverend at New Zion, on May 15, 2004. Rev. Derrell H. Hughes and Rev. Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr. also served. Several associate ministers aided the church during the search for a new pastor.

In September 2012, New Zion called Rev. Carey E. McCall, III, as pastor. He delivered his first sermon on November 25, 2012. Pastor McCall served faithfully until his resignation on September 6, 2016.

Under Pastor McCall’s leadership, New Zion witnessed many blessings. New ministries were created. On March 29, 2014, Pastor McCall ordained Deacon Thomas M. White. He also ordained Rev. Stanley L. Ellington and Rev. Lillie D. Blakeley-Holman as Reverends on May 3, 2014.

In January 2016, New Zion adopted “Team New Zion: Pillars of Leadership” as its dictum. The church continues to thrive through spiritual training and Bible studies. New Zion Baptist Church stands as a beacon of light. It presses toward the future in the name of Jesus Christ.
