Consider this: a serene garden, meticulously designed, lies before you. This is Chishaku-in. It is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto’s Higashiyama-ku. Let me tell you about its fascinating past and beauty.

Chishaku-in’s story begins far from Kyoto. It started at Mt. Koya as a sub-temple of Daidenpo-in. Priest Kakuban founded it in 1130. Conflicts led Kakuban and followers to Mt. Negoro-san. In 1585, Toyotomi Hideyoshi destroyed the temple area. Priest Genyu had to leave. Tokugawa Ieyasu supported Genyu’s efforts to rebuild Chishaku-in in Kyoto in 1601.

This place is the headquarters of the Chisan School of Shingon Buddhism. Over 3000 temples in Japan belong to this school.

Notice the celebrated garden. It shows Japanese garden design from the Momoyama Period. That was between 1573 and 1603. Many believe Sen no Rikyu, a tea master, designed it. Azaleas bloom here in late April.

The temple suffered damage from fires in 1682 and 1947. Half of the famous Fusuma-e paintings were lost then. Fusuma-e are paintings on paper sliding doors.

But the paintings that remain are a main attraction. They are thought to be by Hasegawa Tohaku and his son Kyuzo. Pine Tree and Flowering Plants is magnificent. Cherry and Maple Trees are too. So are Pine and Plum Trees. These are on panels inside the temple.

If you visit on June 15, attend the Green Leaf Festival at Chishaku-in. It celebrates the birth of Kukai, also known as Kobo-Daishi. He lived from 744 to 835. It displays the mysteries of Shingon. The festival includes a fire ceremony. It is a symbolic link between heaven and earth.

Chishaku-in is near Sanjusangen-do Temple and Kyoto National Museum. Find it in the Higashiyama district.

To reach Chishaku-in from Kyoto Station, take bus 206. Get off at Hakubutsukan-Sanjusangen-do-Mae stop. From Keihan Shichijo Station, walk ten minutes.

Chishaku-in offers a serene escape. It blends history, art, and nature. Take time to enjoy the garden and reflect on the past.
