Founded in 1968 by Reverend H Ellis Turner the Promised Land Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It began humbly. A few members of Carron Baptist Church gathered in a lodge hall. Reverend Turner had resigned. He wanted to return to evangelism. These dedicated individuals supported his vision. They encouraged him to start another church. Sis Julia Dixon generously offered her lodge hall. The first service was held there in December 1967.
The Promised Land Baptist Church quickly outgrew its initial home. In September 1968 the congregation moved to a new building on Farragut Street NW. Financial blessings followed. They soon acquired another property. A gospel chorus formed. Senior and youth choirs followed. Growth continued. The church needed a larger sanctuary. The congregation found their present location at 401 Van Buren Street NW. This marked another significant step in the church’s journey.
Tragedy struck in 1982. Reverend Turner passed away. Finding a new leader took nearly two years. Reverend Walter E Bryant was called to pastor in October 1984. He had a calm demeanor and a humble spirit. He was anointed to preach the gospel.
Under Reverend Bryant’s leadership Promised Land thrived. New ministries flourished. Youth ministry a men’s fellowship a couples ministry a golden age ministry and a prison ministry all emerged. A Wednesday evening Bible study became a comprehensive Bible Institute. The Promised Land Post a church newsletter debuted in 1993. A significant addition to the church building was completed in 1994. This included a choir loft a baptismal pool two classrooms and a kitchen extension. The church also established its constitution and bylaws in 1998.
Reverend Bryant served until January 9 2000. Several ministers stepped up. They continued to spread the good news. Deacon Board Chairman Rodney Brown assumed a leadership role. The church prospered. A pulpit committee searched for a new shepherd.
Reverend Thomas J Horne was voted interim pastor in December 2001 and pastor in December 2002. He organized the Evangelistic Ministry and the Women’s Ministry. He served until September 30 2008. Reverend Ayize Sabater then served as interim pastor. He revised the church’s constitution and bylaws in 2010. He also activated the Disciplinary Council.
Reverend Peter J Spann became the fourth pastor on April 9 2011. He was installed on July 31 2011. He focused on community outreach. He implemented several new ministries including an in-reach ministry a technology and social media ministry a young adult ministry a children’s church and a men’s Bible study. He served until June 2014.
After a period with guest preachers Reverend Kevin A O’Bryant became the pastor-elect in April 2016. He was installed on August 21 2016. He initiated a health awareness ministry and renewed the junior ushers ministry. In 2018 online giving was implemented. That year also marked the church’s 50th anniversary.
The Promised Land Baptist Church continues its ministry. They serve their community through various outreach programs. They have adapted to challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the adoption of digital resources for spreading God’s word. The church has also made significant upgrades to its building. They have shown resilience. They have displayed faith. They stand as a beacon of hope and community.
