These changes reflected GSES’s growing focus on a more holistic approach to environmental studies.

Over the years GSES expanded. A doctoral program in Environmental Planning was added in 1981. A joint doctoral program in Landscape Architecture followed in 1990. A joint master’s/doctoral program in Urban Planning began in 1997. GSES also created executive programs. These programs aimed to enhance the understanding of urban and environmental problems for professionals.

GSES is more than just classrooms and lectures. The Environmental Planning Institute conducts significant research. This research often focuses on government projects urban design environmental design transportation systems and the creation of cultural complexes.
