Question: Ever heard of a place called P.M. Turro? It stands as a silent witness to Milan’s evolving story. This isn’t just any spot. P.M. Turro whispers tales of Lombardy’s past. It saw Turro’s transformation from a small comune to a vital part of Milan.

P.M. Turro’s history is intertwined with the district it calls home. Turro’s roots go way back. A settlement existed here at least since 1489. The name Turro itself hints at ancient origins. It may come from “tur”. That’s the Lombard word for “tower”. Maps from as early as 950 show a tower. It was called “Tauris Turris”. That means “bull’s tower” in Latin.

For a while Turro existed as its own entity. Under Napoleon in 1808 Turro was annexed to Milan. After the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia was founded it regained its independence in 1816. By 1861 Turro had a population of just 319 people. In 1864 its name changed to “Turro Milanese”. Noble Milanese families owned much of Turro’s rural land. These included the Melzi the Dal Verme the Visconti and the Parravicini families.

The early 20th century brought big changes to Turro. Factories sprung up and the population soared. From 555 in 1901 it jumped to 7883 in 1911. By the 1930s it reached 20000. In 1918 Turro was permanently annexed to Milan. Until the 1980s Turro was mainly industrial. As factories closed it became more residential.

Today Turro retains green spaces despite development. The Naviglio Martesana canal flows through it. Parco Martesana connects to Parco Sempione by bike lane. Another park is Parco Trotter. One notable monument in Turro is the church of Santa Maria Assunta. It is one of Milan’s oldest outskirts churches. Built in the early 1800s it replaced a 16th-century church. It features a neoclassical facade and fresco decorations.

Now about P.M. Turro itself. As a railway service station operated by RFI it plays a vital role in Milan’s transportation network. While Turro has evolved P.M. Turro remains a constant a point of movement connecting people and places. It’s more than just a station. It’s a part of Turro’s and Milan’s ongoing story. As we move on remember P.M. Turro’s quiet presence. It stands for Turro’s past present and future.
